UK’s maritime agency says ship got struck by projectile in Yemen

(MENAFN) A ship was struck by an “unknown projectile” east of Yemen’s Aden port, causing a fire, according to the UK maritime authorities on Saturday.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported receiving notice of the incident, which occurred 116 nautical miles east of Aden. “Yemen. A vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile, resulting with a fire. Authorities are investigating,” the statement said.

The agency cautioned vessels to navigate the area carefully and to report any suspicious activity. The Red Sea remains one of the world’s busiest routes for oil and fuel shipments.

Yemen’s Houthi movement has increasingly targeted cargo vessels linked to Israel in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, signaling support for Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 68,000 people have died amid Israel’s assault since October 2023.
