UN Yemen Port Mission to End After 7-Year Deployment
Resolution 2813 authorizes a conclusive two-month extension for the UN Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) through March 31, 2026, according to the Council's decision. During this terminal phase, the operation will scale back its ground presence and on-site activities while transferring remaining responsibilities to the office of the UN special envoy for Yemen.
The resolution mandates that beginning April 1, 2026, UNMHA will enter formal liquidation proceedings. The text directs the UN secretary-general to develop a comprehensive transition and dissolution strategy in coordination with Yemeni stakeholders.
The measure passed with 13 affirmative votes, though China and Russia chose to abstain from the ballot.
UNMHA was originally deployed to oversee compliance with the Stockholm Agreement provisions governing Hodeidah—a strategic Red Sea port city situated along Yemen's western coastline—along with the Salif and Ras Issa port facilities. The Stockholm accord was negotiated between the Yemeni government and the Houthis in late 2018.
The mission's termination signals a significant shift in international engagement with Yemen's protracted conflict.
