Yemen Health System Nears Breaking Point Amid Escalation—WHO

(MENAFN) Yemen’s renewed conflict escalation is placing severe strain on its already weakened healthcare system, with rising casualties and displacement pushing essential services toward a “breaking point,” the World Health Organization (WHO) warned Tuesday.

Annette Heinzelmann, WHO regional emergency director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said in Geneva that 4,481 casualties, including 838 deaths, have been recorded since Aug. 6, citing figures from the Health Ministry in Aden.

More than 180,500 people have been displaced across 10 governorates, while more than 3,600 Yemenis have fled to Djibouti since Sept. 10. Nearly half of those crossing the border are children, and humanitarian agencies are preparing for between 5,000 and 10,000 additional arrivals in the coming weeks.

Heinzelmann said nine healthcare facilities or medical assets in Taiz, Lahj and Al-Hodeidah have either been damaged, shut down, forced out of operation or directly attacked.

Emergency maternity and newborn services have also been suspended at hospitals in Marib and Ras Al-Arah as medical personnel and available resources have been shifted toward treating trauma patients.

The healthcare system was already operating under significant pressure before the latest escalation. Heinzelmann said only about 60% of health facilities across Yemen were fully operational.
