Houthi Shelling Kills 2, Wounds 16 in Yemen’s Taiz Province

(MENAFN) Houthi bombardment of multiple districts in southwestern Taiz province killed at least two civilians and wounded 16 more on Saturday, the Yemeni Interior Ministry reported.

Among the wounded were three children, six women and a number of elderly residents, the ministry said.

The ministry said Houthi forces launched a barrage of projectiles at Al-Nawazil, Al-Qasr, Al-Dhabab, al-Thalatheen Street, Samea, Al-Aqrud, Al-Zanouj, Akkad, Al-Dhahr al-Ulya and the Al-Hangar checkpoint.

The Houthis have not responded to the ministry’s account.

Fighting also flared on the front lines. In a statement posted on Facebook, the 22nd Mecha Brigade of Yemen’s army said government troops, supported by the Popular Resistance, beat back a Houthi assault on the Al-Shaqab area south of Taiz.

The brigade said more than 25 Houthi fighters died and several others were wounded in the clashes. A military vehicle mounted with a 23 mm gun was also destroyed, it said.

At the same time, government forces launched drone counterattacks on Houthi positions along the Al-Shaqab front, the brigade said. Troops also downed a Houthi suicide drone over the Al-Arous area of southern Taiz, it added.

The Houthis have not commented on either the Interior Ministry’s or the army’s statements.

The violence is part of an escalation that began in July, the most intense since a relative lull that followed a UN-brokered truce taking effect in April 2022.

Yemen has been gripped by war since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in September 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015 to back the internationally recognized government.
