Houthis Launch 4 Missiles at Marib, Home to 2.2M Displaced People

(MENAFN) The Houthis launched four ballistic missiles at the government-held city of Marib late Monday, local authorities and military officials said, as the army separately claimed it had beaten back a Houthi offensive in the south.

Marib’s local government said the missiles struck at a densely populated city sheltering vast numbers of displaced civilians. Officials offered no immediate word on casualties or damage.

The strike is the latest in a escalating series on the city. A day earlier, local authorities reported that the Houthis fired eight ballistic missiles at Marib, again with no information on possible losses. On Oct. 15, the governorate reported an attack involving nine ballistic missiles and seven other projectiles aimed at residential neighborhoods.

Marib is a key government stronghold and a hub for oil and gas production. According to government figures, it hosts more than 2.2 million displaced people.

On a separate front, the army said Monday that its forces had repelled a Houthi attack on the Kahbub front in western Lahj governorate, in southern Yemen. In a statement, the army-affiliated Southern Giants Brigades said Houthi fighters mounted repeated waves of assaults, setting off hours of clashes involving a range of weapons.

Government forces, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, drove the attackers back, killing and wounding Houthi fighters and destroying military equipment, the statement said. The brigades gave no casualty figures.

Yemen has been locked in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several governorates in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year to back the internationally recognized government. The current round of fighting erupted in July, after a 2022 UN-brokered truce collapsed.
